Akinleye Sowunmi

Co-founder, has a background in Chemical Engineering with prior research experience in technical aspects of energy production from second generation biofuels. He is a recipient of the prestigious IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) Scholarship and an associate member of the Institute of Strategic Management, Nigeria. He is currently enrolled in the PhD program at Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi. He is well learned in key environmental issues; in several forms of renewable energy technologies and in Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.



Chukwuka Madumelu

Co-founder, is a 2nd year MSc student in Materials Science & Engineering at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi. He worked with First Bank of Nigeria for about 3years before joining Masdar Institute. He is very passionate about entrepreneurship, and has interests in farming and renewable energy development in Nigeria and Africa. Chukwuka’s current research on thin film solar cells, has given him tremendous insight into solar energy technologies, which he believes is a key solution to energy crisis in his home country, Nigeria, and is committed to seeing its utilization to the fullest potential in Nigeria.

Oghare Victor Ogidiama

Co-founder, is a PhD student at Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi. He has passionate interest in business with keen entrepreneurial skills in agriculture, energy and real estates. He owns a poultry and fish farm in his native Delta state. He has several years work experience as an engineer including working with facilities management department in Chevron Nigeria and procurement department in Saipem Nigeria. He has also carried out research on energy and environmental related issues.



Samuel Olufemi Sofela

Co-founder, is currently a Masters Student in Microsystems Engineering at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. He has diverse work experience across the agricultural, beverage, oil and gas industries. Though with core engineering background in one of the foremost universities in Nigeria, Samuel has worked as a market analyst and business consultant in the marketing department of MRS Oil Nigeria. His current research work is based on energy-efficient carbon nanomaterial-based devices for application in energy systems to reduced energy consumption. His knowledge mix has driven him to be part of the progressive change in resolving the long-lingering energy challenge in Nigeria.

Tariq Shamim (Prof.)

Senior adviser, earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering and a master’s in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. He received a second master’s in mechanical engineering from the University of Windsor, Canada, and holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the N.E.D. University in Karachi, Pakistan. He is currently a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi. His research falls into the broad area of sustainability with special focus on clean energy technologies, and has been published in several international journals. His research and consulting work has been supported by several grants from the NSF, US Department of Defense, US Department of Energy, automotive and aerospace companies, and the government of Abu Dhabi. He is a recipient of SAE International Ralph Teetor award (2004) for excellence in teaching.



Dr. Bruce Ferguson

Is a co-founder and former COO of Orbital Sciences Corporation, a space technology company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. He is also a co-founder and former CEO of Edenspace Systems Corporation, a plant biotechnology company, and has been an angel investor in ten other technology-based start-up companies. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Carnegie Institution of Science. He has served as Vice Chairman of the Kansas State University Research Foundation and as a Fellow at the George Washington University Centre for International Science and Technology Policy. He received his Juris Doctor, MBA, Master of Education and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Harvard University, where he was an honorary Harvard National Scholar and an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He is currently a Professor of Practice, Engineering systems and management at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, and also the Head, Masdar Institute Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Jens Ejbye Schmidt (Prof.)

Senior adviser, is a trained chemical engineer with a PhD in Environmental Biotechnology. He has over 15 years of experience in management of several research groups from 10 to 40. He is currently a professor in biofuels at Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi with deep knowledge of all other renewable energy technologies and electricity markets. He has worked in EU financed projects and has a large network of collaborators throughout the world, both at university and industry level. He is dynamic, focused and has the ability to work successfully with persons of all temperaments.
